As Demeter was the goddess of all growing things, the Greeks believed that she gifted all humans with grain and the first ever fig tree. Many other Greek gods had temples that stood tall on wide-open places where they were worshipped, Demeter however was worshipped though hidden ceremonies that were held underground centred at the village of Eleusis. The Thesmophoria was a special women-only festival that was held once a year in honour of Demeter and Persephone.
