Hera was both queenly and beautiful, women all over Greece worshipped her and asked for her protection as well as to bring them happiness in their married life. Hera’s own marriage was a very unhappy one, she was married to Zeus who was also her brother. Zeus often left her to chase and fool around with other women which left Hera bitter, she showed her anger by punishing the many women the Zeus loved.
Hera could be very cruel due to how Zeus treated her, she victimized Heracles, who was one of Zeus and the human princess Alcmene’s son, all of his life. The first time she tried to have Heracles killed, she sent two snakes to kill him when he was just a baby but this plan failed as he strangled them. Later in his life Hera tried to kill him again by having a hundred-headed Hydra attack him but she once again failed when he cut off the Hydra’s head and burning where he had cut to prevent them from growing back.

Hera planned to overthrow Zeus with Poseidon and Athena. Together the three deities managed to place Zeus in chains but their plans were foiled when the sea goddess Thetis saved Zeus by bringing a giant from Tartarus to release him (Myths Encyclopedia, 2016). Another version states that all gods joined Hera’s revolt against Zeus and they chained him to a couch. They all argued about what they were going to do next, whilst this was happening Hecatoncheires freed Zeus. In both versions, Zeus was quick to punish Hera by hanging her by the wrists from the sky with gold chains.
