Poseidon could be calm and gentle or very rough and dangerous, it was believed that he could raise terrible storms or calm them by welding his three pronged trident. Along with ruling the sea Poseidon was the god of earthquakes and tidal waves, travellers on the sea and land prayed to him and asked for his protection. Every two years, a sports festival called the Isthmian Games was held at the trading port Corinth, southern Greece, in his honour.

Poseidon often asserted his independence even when Zeus was king of the gods, he once even plotted to overthrow Zeus with Hera and Athena. Together the three deities managed to put Zeus in chains however their plans were foiled when the sea goddess Thetis saved Zeus by bringing a giant from Tartarus to release him from the chains. As a punishment for this rebellion, Zeus had Poseidon serve as a slave to the king of Troy, Laomedon, for a year. During this time Poseidon helped construct walls around the city however, Laomedon refused to pay for this work and Poseidon took revenge by siding with the Greeks during the Trojan war.
