Hephaestus, being the god of fire and metalworking, had the ability to turn rock into deadly bronze weapons or even into beautiful pieces of gold jewellery. Hephaestus was thrown from Mount Olympus but there are two different versions as to how and why this happened.
The first being that his mother Hera threw him off when he was born as he was born crippled, he fell into the ocean where was raised by Thetis and Eurynome. After he was ejected from Mount Olympus he spent nine years in a cave by the sea practising his metalwork skills. As a punishment for Hera for throwing him off Mount Olympus, he made her a golden throne that trapped her as soon as she sat down (Macdonald, 2002).
The other version is that he once tried to protect his mother from one of Zeus’ advances and as a result, Zeus threw him off Mount Olympus and this caused a physical disability. He fell onto the island on Lemnos where her became a master craftsman and was later accepted back to Mount Olympus as the craftsman of the gods fashioning beautiful armour, weapons and shields (Greek Mythology.com, 2016).
Zeus had Hephaestus marry Aphrodite. Hephaestus learned that Aphrodite was having an affair with her brother Ares so he devised a plan that in turn would humiliate both Aphrodite and Ares in front of the other gods. He made a fine golden net that would trap both Aphrodite and Ares, once they had been caught in the net, Hephaestus called the other gods to look in order to humiliate them (Myths Encyclopedia, 2016).
