Hermes was very bright, quick-witted, charming and talented, he created the Lyre (see image below) when he was very young. Zeus chose to make Hermes his messenger and spy who was to keep a lookout and carry news from Mount Olympus, to the humans far below and to Hades in the Underworld. As Hermes job required him to travel on many journeys, he came to be worshipped as the god of travellers and merchants who travel long distances buying and selling goods.

When Hermes was born, he leaped out of his crib to play a prank on Apollo, that being to steal all of his cattle and the go back to his crib and act innocent. Apollo worked out who had stolen his cattle and took Hermes to Zeus to have him punished, when he told Zeus what Hermes had done Zeus simply laughed and didn’t punish Hermes. As an apology Hermes gave Apollo the Lyre that he has just invented. Hermes also appears in many other myths such as in the Odyssey and the myth of Pandora.
