In Greek myths, Hades ruled the underworld even though it was not his choice as Hades was left with the Underworld after Zeus and Poseidon chose to rule the heavens and the seas. No one wanted to rule the Underworld as it was a cold, dark place that had no sunlight and was inundated with souls of the dead. Hades rarely left the underworld which started to turn him cold and grim much like the kingdom that he ruled.
Hades was the most feared out of all of the gods, people were even afraid to speak his name as they feared that if they caught Hades attention, the would die sooner. Hades had a huge three headed dog named Cerberus who guarded the entrance of the underworld to ensure that only the dead entered. After a soul passed into the underworld it was then judged to decide whether is was an evil soul or a good soul. Evil souls were punished and sent far below Hades castle whereas good souls were sent to a beautiful place called the Elysian Fields.
